Like many things in the world of bicycle travel, there is no correct answer here. Deciding between the use of two or four panniers will depend on the size of your panniers, the length of your tour, the amount of money you are willing to spend, and any number of other factors. Lift the pannier’s carry handle upward above the top of your rack and hook the pannier on your rack’s outer railing. At this point, some panniers will lock to the rack automatically, while others will need to be locked and secured in place manually. Inexpensive bicycle panniers will have no attachment of any kind at the bottom of the bag. Medium grade panniers will usually have a bungee attachment of some kind, but this bungee is usually unmoveable and can quickly wear out or break after just a short period of time.
These offer great versatility as you can fit them to almost any bike in a matter of minutes (you’ll need to look at specific models if you run a dropper post, though). The holster fits up to a 14-litre dry bag, which is also included, and is mounted on the bike using what Restrap say is a hard-wearing buckle that is easy to adjust even when wearing gloves. Support straps can be used to attach the holster through the fork crown for when riding on rougher terrain. The Porcelain Rocket Mr Fusion uses a small loop shaped rack, and the Specialized Burra Burra and Arkel Seatpacker followed suit. The Bedrock Coconino uses a nifty Rail Wing to dissuade tail wag. If you are able to keep your packlist slim and trim, it’s worth keeping in mind the half frame pack.
We particularly like the Hauser from Acre; and here are a few more backpacks we’d recommend. A larger liter dry bag can be cinched to the handlebars with two webbing cinch straps or Voile straps. Add duct tape to contact points between the dry bag and cables and/or brake levers. Otherwise, pick up a Revelate Salty Roll for $39 and get two 25” Voilé straps (around $6.50 each). But, it is more than enough for the essential things to bring with you. I got caught in a huge rain while I was in the middle of a ride.
